Cecile Hannay

Cecile Hannay is a Scientist in the Atmospheric Modeling and Predictability (AMP) Section of the CGD Laboratory at the NSF National Center for Atmospheric Research (NSF NCAR).

She serves as the liaison for the Atmospheric Model Working Group (AMWG), supporting the Community Earth System Model (CESM) and the Community Atmosphere Model (CAM) user communities. In this role, she assists scientists with model configuration, experiment design, diagnostics, and scientific analysis, while helping coordinate atmospheric model development activities across CESM.

Cecile is a member of the CESM3 development team and is deeply involved in the evaluation and improvement of CESM3 and CAM7. Her work focuses on model tuning, diagnostics, and understanding interactions among physical parameterizations. She collaborates closely with model developers to assess new model capabilities, improve climate simulations, and support the scientific foundations of future CESM releases. She also contributes to model evaluation efforts and CMIP7 preparation activities, helping ensure that CESM continues to meet the evolving needs of the climate research community.

A key aspect of Cecile’s work is supporting the CESM community. She provides scientific and technical guidance to model developers, users, and visiting scientists, helping them design experiments, interpret results, and understand model behavior.

Cecile is passionate about education, outreach, and community building. She has been actively involved in the CESM Tutorial program since its inception in 2010, serving as an organizer, instructor, and developer of tutorial materials. Through annual CESM Summer Tutorials, specialized workshops, and international training events, she has helped hundreds of students and researchers learn to use CESM and CAM effectively. She is committed to fostering the next generation of climate scientists and promoting the widespread use of community climate models.
