Biography

Dr. Curtis Walker, M.ASCE is a Scientist at the U.S. National Science Foundation National Center for Atmospheric Research (NSF NCAR) as part of the Research Applications Laboratory (RAL) Transportation Meteorology Applications Program (TMAP) specializing in research at the intersections of transportation, weather / climate, and artificial intelligence. He is also a Section Co-Lead for University Partnerships within NSF NCAR Education, Engagement, and Early-Career Development (EdEC). Further, he is an Affiliate Research Scientist at Howard University. He has over 15 years of research, development, and project management experience. Past work includes leading the development of a winter severity index for transportation stakeholders, leading development of a roadway flood severity index, leading modeling of road construction air quality impacts, co-developing a survey of practice for winter maintenance operations, co-leading machine-learning applications for winter maintenance operations to enhance safety and mobility, contributing to development of a maintenance decision-support system, leading an investigation of pavement temperature sensitivity, and engagement with the weather enterprise and automotive industry to facilitate all-weather capable connected, electric, and automated vehicles. He is an Associate Member (A.M.) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and an active member of the American Meteorological Society (AMS), Association of American Geographers (AAG), Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITSA), Transportation Research Board (TRB), and American Geophysical Union (AGU) serving on several organizational committees.
