Abstract

An accurate simulation of the multipath environment for a ground reference station antenna is an invaluable tool for rapid comparison of antenna types, receiver implementations, and candidate antenna locations. This paper describes the development of such a model designed to support the development of the Joint Precision Approach and Landing System (JPALS) Local Area Differential GPS (LDGPS), a military differential landing system similar in architecture to the civil Local Area Augmentation System (LAAS). Multipath is expected to be a significant error source for the ground reference station, especially for tactical and special operations deployments where short setup times are required. We have developed a GPS multipath simulator for both C/A and P(Y) code and carrier to simulate and analyze potential multipath mitigation improvements due to beam-steering antenna equipment. This paper describes the elements of the model and compares simulation results to experimental data. In particular, we focus on multipath comparisons of fixed beam to steered beam antennas.
