Abstract
We present the algebraic proof of a sum rule that is relevant in the theory of Stark broadening of hydrogen and hydrogenic lines. This is accomplished by applying Gauss' recursion formulas for the hypergeometric function to the analytical expression of the dipole matrix elements involved in the summation.
