Abstract
A new method for forecasting turbulence due to mountain waves is presented. The method is robust and can be used in an operational forecasting environment. In this method the mountainous regions are divided up into squares where mountain-induced turbulence is known to be favored from climatology. Large scale numerical weather prediction output is then analyzed within these squares for conditions favorable to mountain wave turbulence. This analysis is based on forecasting rules-of-thumb established by forecasters over the last 50 years. For those regions which are favorable, a two-dimensional fine scale numerical simulation model is run using sounding data produced from the large scale model to produce the final forecast of turbulence location and intensity.
