Abstract

Aerosondes are small, long-endurance robotic aircraft. To date, Aerosondes have conducted numerous missions in a wide variety of weather systems, including severe weather and tropical cyclones, in support of objectives for operational meteorology and environmental research. This paper describes the operational aspects of these missions including regulatory issues, satellite communications, the virtual field environment, navigation within high winds, aircraft loss, and data collected.
