Abstract
A series of numerical experiments were conducted to assess the impact of global positioning system (GPS) precipitable water vapor (PWV) data, 3DVAR assimilation system and the assimilation strategy. The hourly GPS PWV data were provided by UCAR COSMIC Project, starting from 21 April, 2002 in near real-time mode. A validation study for this type of data was performed with the MM5 model simulation. It was shown that the constructed background error statistics (BES) is a key component of 3DVAR system. It was concluded that GPS PWV data can be used to improve convection forecast.
