Correction to: Communications Earth & Environmenthttps://doi.org/10.1038/s43247-025-02714-2, published online 26 August 2025 In the version of this article initially published, there were label errors in Figs. 2c and 5c, where “La Niña” appeared originally as “Niña,” and in Fig. 8a, b, where x-axis flow rates were listed as “(mm)” rather than “(mm/day).” In the sixth and eighth paragraphs of the Discussion, the second and third questions were listed as “i)” rather than “ii)” and “iii).” The figures and Discussion are now amended in the HTML and PDF versions of the article.
