    Abstract

The Process Study and Model Improvement (PSMI) panel has established a set of recommended "best practices" for process studies on which they aim to help ensure that U.S. CLIVAR process studies will ultimately lead to model improvements. These best practices are broadly applicable to all process studies and are as well being expected to become widely accepted while also encouraging the broad use of data. In addition, the adoption of these best practices is anticipated to result in the development of a culture of data archiving which will foster open and centralized data access and that the value of the process-study dataset will only increase with the passage of time. Furthermore, scientists are being encouraged on conducting such process studies as a way of enhancing their own legacy.
