Abstract
An aircraft was used to study regions of the Tropics and to measure liquid water and ice particles in the southern Amazon region of Brazil during the wet season and near Kwajalein, Marshall Islands. It was found that liquid water is indeed usually removed by precipitation low in the cloud, but small patches of liquid water are occassionally able to survive higher in the cloud at temperatures colder than -17°C. A surprising observation during sampling was the presence of chain aggregates of individual ice crystals in the colder regions of both Brazilian and Kwajalein cumuli.
