Abstract

Biosurfactants are the leading environmentally friendly sustainable microbial product. They are well known due to their high selectivity and specific stability at extreme temperature, pH, and salinity. In recent years, biosurfactants have become an influential group due to their various properties and structural diversity that can be employed in a variety of fields such as industry, biotechnology, and the environment. Biosurfactants rely on microorganisms, substrates, and purification strategies to determine their chemistry and cost. It has been demonstrated that the amphiphilic nature of biosurfactants can lead to their distribution into two immiscible surfaces by reducing surface tension between the surfaces. A number of advanced and highly accurate characterization techniques for biosurfactant were utilized, including high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and thin-layer chromatography (TLC), etc. Hence, the present chapter focuses on various extraction and purification techniques as well as the characterization assays and tools for the exploration of extracted biosurfactants.
