Abstract
The use of SZ (Sachidananda and Zrnic 1999) algorithms for the mitigation of range and velocity ambiguities in the WSR-88D radar are discussed. The SZ algorithms allows the resolution of signals from as many as four trips in a wide variety of conditions. The data quality of WSR-88D radar is improved by removing the ground clutter power using infinite impulse response (IIR) filters which effectively removes the power around zero velocity but also imparts phase delay which is non-linear. The SZ-1 and SZ-2 censoring algorithms are used for the censoring of the recovered moment data when there is contamination from competing trips. The SZ-1 and SZ-2 algorithm are performed during the weak trip processing to test for the existence of excessive clutter.
