Abstract
In order to produce convective turbulence warnings that are operationally useful for the aviation community, it is important that the warnings accurately reflect the impact of the turbulent wind fields on aircraft operations. This suggests the importance of the ability to convert meteorological radar measurements into aircraft-specific information. In this article, an introduction to the impacts of turbulent wind fields on aircraft is given, followed by a discussion on the existing WSR-88D turbulence algorithm and potential alternative methods for estimating the intensity of convective turbulence from Doppler radars.
