Abstract
The developments made on the operational 4D-Var data assimilation system at the European Center for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) are discussed. The system is gradually being enhanced for the use of frequent and high density data and for assimilation of cloud and rain information at relatively high analysis resolution. A more accurate and efficient 4D-Var algorithm, and a new humidity analysis was implemented in the system. An important trend in the development of the 4D-Var data assimilation system was the rapid increase in the use of satellite data for improved analysis accuracy.
