Abstract

After the case studies, comparison experiments with and without radar data assimilation, and the semi-operational testing, the WRF 3D-Var Doppler radar data-assimilation system has been implemented for full operational production in 2006. The Korean Meteorological Administration's (KMA) procedure for Doppler radar data is sophisticated where it includes data preprocessing, assimilation with WRF 3D-Var, and analysis update cycling. After the smooth and successful transferring of the developed system at KMA, KMA is running the advanced system operationally and benefiting Korea. Currently, the radar data assimilation resides in both National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and KMA, serving as a very useful tool for research.
