Abstract

The effects of turbulence on the coagulational growth of cloud droplets were discussed. High-resolution simulations were conducted on a highly scalable shared-memory supercomputer (SGI Origin) for higher flow Reynolds numbers. The two methods were used to study the collision efficiency in turbulent clouds. The first method modifies the hydrodynamic forces or local flow conditions on a droplet due to the presence of other droplets in the neighborhood of that droplet. The second method was based on a lattice Boltzmann simulation in which non-slip boundary conditions on the surface droplet were directly represented, with initial far-field flow conditions provided by direct numerical simulations (DNS).
