ENSO in the Global Climate System

Abstract

In this chapter, the setting for ENSO is described, beginning with a brief introduction to the total climate system followed by a focus on the tropical Pacific and the mean annual cycle. These set the stage for ENSO to occur, and the main elements and components are introduced, highlighting why the tropical Pacific is so impor-tant. ENSO is then described along with the main indices used to track it over time and the associated patterns in certain key fields, plus the diversity and complexity that can arise. Teleconnections and other modes of variability are then briefly introduced, including decadal variability in the tropical Pacific. Climate change influences are also presented, along with an introduction to the main impacts.
