Abstract
Rain enhancement has always been a very controversial topic. Recently a new technique, the hygroscopic seeding, has made significant advances and shows interesting perspectives for the increase of the water resource for the ever increasing populations, but for conditions of latitude and climate similar of the ones in Mexico. In this paper information associated with a workshop on the topic, where many world experts in cloud physics, instrumentation and scientifically based rain enhancement participated is presented. Background and fundamental concepts for the understanding of hygroscopic seeding are given, as well as a description of three scientific experiments recently carried out. It continues with an interpretation (from a hydraulic engineering point of view) of the discussions that took place in terms of questions still standing and required new studies. This presentation of the topic for the hydraulic engineering and water resources community is geared towards allowing a balanced and realistic decision making in this regard.
