Abstract

NCAR's two-phase GIS Initiative aims to support the use of GIS both as an analysis and an infrastructure tool in atmospheric research and to address broader issues of spatial data management, interoperability, and geoinformatics research in atmospheric sciences. In phase I, the initiative focused on assessing the applicability of GIS to meteorology and climatology. Phase II extended the initiative's scope by including five programs: education, training, and user support; research enabled by GIS; data integration and distribution; research in GIS technology; and community building. Up to the present, the initiative continues to explore possible uses of GIS technology in atmospheric research and to advance the capabilities of GIS to handle four-dimensional, real-time data.
