Abstract
Optimization of the network design for verification of forecasts of cloud ceiling height and visibility was performed. The categorical function used for categorical kriging has a useful interpretation for finding an optimal network design. Inspection of plots of visibility values for several time points suggest that the final design appears to be quite reasonable. The results show that the network can be thinned for visibility data, but for ceiling height such thining based on this analysis is not appropriate.
