Abstract

The Gamma drop size distribution (DSD) parameters are retrieved from radar measurements and the constrained relation. Rain rate and particle size are calculated and compared with that from video disdrometer measured DSD. The constrained Gamma DSD retrieval has the following advantages: it provides more accurate rain rate estimation with the wave scattering physics taken into account; it gives a better estimation of medium volume diameter than exponential DSD model and the retrieval DSD can be verified by comparing estimated KDP with measurement. Closed-form expressions for reflectivity, specific propagation phase and differential reflectivity were obtained using rigorous scattering calculations.
