Abstract
Empirical, semi-empirical, and theoretical models of the thermosphere and ionosphere and of photo-chemical processes occurring therein are briefly described. An overview is provided of this section of the issue, containing papers on these topics and on the measurement of thermospheric and ionospheric properties from space. The importance to these endeavors of accurate measurement and specification of the solar ultraviolet, extreme-ultraviolet, and soft x-ray irradiance is discussed. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd.
