Abstract

Garcia (1991) has shown that it is possible to parameterize the effects of planetary wave breaking by an approach similar to that advocated by Lindzen (1981) for mesospheric gravity waves. This parameterization, and its implementation in a numerical model of the middle atmosphere, are discussed in this paper. It is shown that including parameterized wave breaking leads to more realistic simulations of the dynamical and chemical structure of the stratosphere than are possible with conventional two-dimensional models. -from Author
