Abstract

The North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is a prominent pattern of atmospheric circulation variability that influences climate from the eastern United States to Siberia and from the Arctic to the subtropics. This article provides an overview of this phenomenon and its impacts on temperature, precipitation, sea ice and ocean circulation, and discusses its physical origins and role in future climate change.
