Abstract

Specular null polarization theory has recently been introduced for the case of coherent scattering where a 2×2 scattering is sufficient to describe the scattering process (Hubbert, 1994). In this paper specular null polarization theory is extended to the case of incoherent scattering. Optimum polarization states are derived and the results are discussed in relation to the established radar optimum polarization states. Modeling of ensembles of precipitation particles using the transition (T-) matrix approach is used to illustrate the results of the analysis.
