Abstract
Vegetation emits significant amounts of reactive gases, known as biogenic emissions, to the atmosphere. The most prevalent biogenic emission from plants is isoprene (C5H8), but plants emit a broad suite of chemical compounds. Not all biogenic emissions released into a canopy reach the atmosphere because some react within the canopy or deposit onto vegetation; therefore, understanding the canopy transport is key to explaining atmospheric concentrations of these gases. Biogenic VOC emissions can play an important role in atmospheric chemistry and climate by impacting the concentrations of air pollutants, chemical radicals, and greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Renewable energy sources such as solar power, wind power, geothermal power, and bioenergy will improve energy sustainability and reduce environmental impacts associated with human energy use.
