Abstract
The process of the German reunification influences strongly and on multiple levels situations in eastern German rural areas, small and middle sized towns. The more these are situated away from more important development axes (eg Hamburg-Berlin), they suffer from negative and unpredictable consequences from forced structural adjustment. The town of Wolgast counting 16 500 inhabitants finds itself in such an position in the northeastern corner of the federal province (Bundesland) Mecklengburg-Vorpommern). The "Projekt Stadtkartierung Wolgast' took for one year a closer look at the socioeconomic situation of the population and the city as a whole. The now published report contains a detailed analysis of Wolgast's spatial structure concerning use and planning of urban resources and aims in its conceptual part at a revitalisation of traditional characters of the city's quarters, a redefinition of traffic guideleines and a qualitatively differentiated use of spatial potentials. The activation of the town's outer areas is a key point to a diversified and economically attractive urban environment. -from Publisher
