Abstract
A new mechanism is proposed to explain the origin of mesoscale gravity waves, derived from high-resolution data analyses and modeling studies. The mechanism accounts for all the key features of a mesoscale gravity wave. The mechanism includes a continuous energy surge, the momentum surge that contributes to its long lifetime.
