title = "Retrieval of storm microphysics using Ka band radar observations",
abstract = "Polarimetric radar measurements can be used to deduce the shape and orientation of non-spherical scatterers in the Rayleigh scattering regime. Radars at K-band frequencies are portable due to smaller dimensions and are currently used for airborne measurements of precipitation. Average microphysics of hydrometeors such as shape and size are difficult to estimate using these measurements due to Mie scattering effects. Based on model results, attenuation at nadir incidence can be used to estimate rainfall as the intervening ice layer has minimal effect on the measurement. K-band polarimetric information will aid in identifying regions of ice and melting-ice as indicated by the graupel and hail model results. Further studies are underway to investigate feasibility of using K-band polarimetric information to identify regions of mixed phase precipitation and study its effects on the polarimetric observables.",
