Abstract
This chapter will explore the state of the science and tools available for assessing and responding to weather risks for transportation. To date, much research has focused on responding to current threats through decision support systems and severity indices. Research is also moving in the direction of smaller scales with large eddy simulation models that can quantify risks at the microscale level. Looking to the future requires exploring larger scale and longer term, broader impacts from future extreme weather events and future technology, including connected and automated vehicles. Together, these advances point to new opportunities for making weather resilient vehicle systems more capable of navigating today's hazards and tomorrow's uncertainties.
