Abstract

In this work, the study of Hawaiian rainbands is approached from the general viewpoint of internal self-organization and propagation much as studies of mid-latitude and tropical squall lines have progressed over the past 20 years. In particular, the mesoscale forcing is taken as a given underlying condition in full cognizance of the fact that topographical influences are large and that these may be either thermal or dynamical in nature. As in several earlier studies, the HaRP dataset is the principal basis for the analyses. Data from the NCAR Electra aircraft, CR-3 & and CP-4 Doppler radars, the Portable Automated Mesonet, satellite imagery, NWS soundings, and other sources are used.
