Statistical models of aircraft icing

Abstract

The statistical models applied by the NAtional Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) to improve the forecasts of icing conditions that threaten aircraft are discussed. The current icing potential (CIP) is an expert system model that uses observations and numerical weather prediction (NWP) output to infer information about cloud physics and behavior. Instrumentation on the aircraft collects information on the occurrence of icing, temperature and liquid water content. The CIP diagnosis was statistically post-processed and the models were created using both Pilot Reports (PIREP) and data from the research aircraft.
