Abstract

Reports two separate studies of the radar versus wind relationship, conducted using a set of airbrone radar backscatter measurements and associated in situ measurements obtained during FASINEX (Frontal Air/Sea Interaction Experiment). Outlines how the Airborne Microwave Scatterometer (AMSCAT) works. For the analysis, 355 azimuth scans were used (191 vertical, 164 horizontal polarization). The relative radar backscatter cross section accuracy was 0.3 to 0.5 dB. Considers the offsets of modulation minima (relative to downwind direction), noting that horizontal polarization is shifted more than vertical data. Studies which wind related variable can be correlated with radar backscatter cross section. Friction velocity appears to correlate. Notes deficiencies in the SASS-1 model.
