The Model Evaluation Tools (MET) at the core of METplus - Recent Additions and Enhancements

The Model Evaluation Tools (MET) is an internationally recognized software package used for the verification of Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP). It forms the core statistical component of the larger METplus evaluation system which also contains Python utilities for data I/O, graphics generation, and runtime automation. The Developmental Testbed Center (DTC) provides community support for METplus and heavily uses this software in the testing and evaluation of innovations for Research-to-Operations transition.

The METplus system is deployed in both research and operational settings at multiple institutions, including the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) operational centers (e.g. EMC, NHC, WPC, SPC, OPC) and labs (e.g. ESRL, NSSL), along with the United States Air Force, the Naval Research Laboratories, and the Met Office of the United Kingdom. Representatives from these institutions form the METplus Governance Group, which meets routinely to define priorities and coordinate development.

The MET software has been under continual development since its initial release in 2008. This talk will highlight additions and enhancements to MET from the last two major releases, review current development priorities, and discuss how METplus may be useful to your institution.
