Abstract
An axisymmetric hurricane model and an axisymmetric ocean model were integrated simultaneously for 24 h to investigate the mutual response of the two systems. The weakening of the hurricance in response to the cooling of the ocean's surface by upwelling and mixing results in a lessened response of the ocean. The results suggest that appreciable weakening of a hurricane due to the cooling of the oceanic surface will not occur if it is translating at typical speed. (A)
