Abstract
We present the first observations of the OI 989Å (2p4 ³P ‐ 3s′ ³D°) emission in the tropical nightglow. The morphology and origin of the emission are discussed. Dielectronic recombination of O+ is suggested as the mechanism responsible for populating the 3s′ ³D° state.
