Abstract

What is exciting about the concept of coupled human-water systems (CHWS) is its power to accommodate the plethora of emerging societal problems. The preceding chapters of this book describe how the Panta Rhei decade (2013-2022) has generated new theoretical understandings of human-water coevolution amidst a changing world. But the possibilities for looking at CHWS in a new way are endless. As this chapter shows, there is growing diversity of emerging CHWS studies. As scientists collaborate across disciplines and integrate more frameworks, methods, and data, their results reveal new feedback loops and new phenomena. This chapter presents 19 emerging coevolutions around the world to demonstrate how CHWS is redefining how we look at systems. We hope that in sharing these case studies, scientists will steer CHWS in new directions. Working with stakeholders might advance collective governance goals and potentially avoid the unintended consequences we have experienced in the past.
