Abstract

During the intense geomagnetic storm of May 10-11, 2024, NASA's Global-scale Observations of the Limb and Disk (GOLD) imager revealed unprecedented changes in the nightside ionosphere. One of the most striking observations was the poleward expansion of the Equatorial Ionization Anomaly (EIA). The northern and southern crests of the EIA extended significantly, reaching around 38°N and 35°S magnetic latitude (Mlat), respectively. This poleward movement indicated the presence of a super plasma fountain effect. The southern EIA crest moved at speeds up to 450 m/s over a broad longitudinal range and merged with the aurora australis. Additionally, the southern crest drifted westward, forming a distinctive 'V' shape near 40°W, which coincided with the peak of geomagnetic activity at that longitude as it neared sunset.
